National holiday: Independence Day, 1 October, Id ul-Fitr, Id ul-Kabir, Maulud, Easter and Christmas Constitution: 1979 constitution slightly modified; plan for 1989 constitution to take effect in 1993 was not implemented; draft 1995 constitution has been abandoned and 1979 amended by PRC of Abdulsalami.

Legal system: based on English common law, Islamic law [family and inheritance provisions of shari'ah applicable in the North, more than half of the Yoruba ethnic group that predominate the West of Nigeria are still fighting to have this applicable to them] and tribal law.
